About Me

My name is Priyanka Patel and I am aspiring to become a journalist upon graduation; working for print or digital magazines.

Graduating in July 2020, I currently study Media and Communication (Journalism) and have skills in: content creation, social media and creative writing.

Throughout my degree and work placements, I have developed skills in: verbal and written communication, research and analytical skills, teamwork and working to deadlines.

By developing these skills, I hope to secure a journalism internship after graduation in order to produce stories that represent communities positively, as well as learn from experienced journalists who can build my career forward.

Northwest Missourian - Arts and Entertainment reporter

In January 2019, I studied abroad at Northwest Missouri State University as part of my second year.

During my studies in America, I was an A+E reporter for the student newspaper, Northwest Missourian. My role was to report on campus event and also write opinion pieces on social issues in society. This experience helped me learn how a journalism environment works and how to work to deadlines. I also developed skills in: interviewing, copywriting and learning Associated Press to adhere to American media guidelines.

Fraser Urquhart Media - Editorial Intern

In June 2019, I was an intern at Fraser Urquhart Media, a media agency based in Leicester City Centre. My main responsibilities were to: upload content to the 69 degrees by producing articles from PR releases, writing travel articles for client Birmingham Airport, assisting with planning of PR events and writing articles for clients.

Interning at Fraser Urquhart Media allowed me to see the difference of a small media company vs a large organisation in terms of content output, the range of transferable skills you need and adaptability. I developed reflection skills and learnt how PR and journalism correlate.

Birmingham Live - Intern

In December 2019, I interned for a week at Birmingham Live and worked on the newsdesk alongside editor Jayne Thomspon. During the week, I pitched ideas, shadowed court reporter Ross Mccarthy to gain an understanding of how to report a court case and assisted with reporting the new metro line by helping with taking photos.

This experience was an eye-opener to various areas of journalism and showed me that news is diverse and there are so many aspects to report on. I developed good contacts on this placement, enabling me to use these contacts for networking in the future.
